- Star quarterback at NC State
- Named ACC Player of the Year and Liberty Bowl MVP as a senior in 1967
- Recipient of the 1967 H. C. Kennett Award at NC State
- Member of the ACC All-Academic Team in his final season
- As head coach at Marshall, led the Thundering Herd to the 1992 national title
- Coached at Georgia and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2009
