- Played for five major league teams from 1951-1967
- Batted .295 in 1,718 games, with 126 home runs and 673 runs batted in
- Batted .300 or better five times, including a .368 average for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1954
- Hit .333 for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1960 World Series, his only appearance in the fall classic
- Ranks second behind Manny Mota with 145 major league–career pinch hits and first with 507 career pinch hit–at bats
- After retirement served as a scout and batting instructor for the Atlanta Braves
- Died 1991
