NORTH CAROLINA SPORTS HALL OF FAME
TO CELEBRATE THE 60TH CLASS, WHERE IT ALL STARTED
The Hall was founded in Charlotte (N.C.) in 1963.
RALEIGH, N.C. – Sixty years after Charlotte businessman Jack Wood and attorney Lloyd Caudle led the effort to establish the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (NCSHOF), the 2024 Induction Celebration is returning to its roots.
The 60th Induction Celebration for the NCSHOF will be held May 10, 2024, at the Charlotte Convention Center.
“To quote our ‘Purpose’ statement, the Hall uses sport to connect, enrich and inspire communities across our great state,” said Dr. Jerry McGee, President of the NCSHOF Board of Directors. “What better way to circulate throughout our state than by bringing the Induction Celebration back to the city where it all started, especially at such a notable time.”
Over the past year, NCSHOF Executive Director Trip Durham, the staff and the Board of Directors have reimagined the treasured institution, moving from just a brick-and-mortar exhibit in Wake County to an organization known for its yearlong educational programming. A new college internship program, the launch of a “Fireside Chat” series, and other initiatives are part of that effort.
“Sports transcends all socioeconomical and political boundaries,” said Durham, who is the NCSHOF’s first full-time executive director. “Sports touches our lives and the lives of our families and friends in ways that are unique to each individual but binding as it is the one constant that brings us all together.”
“We’re honored to welcome the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame to the Queen City for its 60th Induction Celebration,” said Tom Murray, CEO of the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. “Charlotte is such a dynamic sports city and will be a wonderful backdrop to highlight the storied careers and incredible accomplishments of the inductees. For this milestone year, our team is excited to help create an inspirational event at the Convention Center full of memorable moments.”
Nominations for the upcoming class of inductees closes on Aug. 1 each year and can be made at NCSHOF.org. A subcommittee of NCSHOF board prepares a list of 40 names to be considered for election by the full board in December. As the Hall prepares for the Induction Celebration in Charlotte, it is expected that invitations to those elected, and the reveal of the Class of 2024, would occur before Dec. 15, 2023.
About the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame
The North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1963 and currently has 400 members enshrined in the prestigious Hall. Considering the average, only seven personalities are inducted each year. The permanent exhibit for the NCSHOF is located on the third floor of the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh and features significant historical objects and memorabilia donated by inductees. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and on Sunday from 12-5 p.m. Admission is free, but contributions are valued.
Events surrounding the celebration are being planned now. Anticipated on-sale date for tickets is Friday, December 15, 2023.
