- Named second-team All-American back in 1935 and first-team in 1936
- Returned a kickoff 105 yards against UNC in 1936
- Also played baseball at Duke and had a brief major league baseball career
- Played professional football with the NFL’s Brooklyn Dodgers from 1937–1941 and Boston Yankees in 1945
- Played for AAFC New York Yankees in 1946
- Named All-League in 1938 and 1940
- Honored as NFL MVP in 1940
- Passed for 4,701 yards in pro career
- Coached Duke baseball team into 1953, taking the team to College World Series in 1961
- Assistant football coach at Duke and player-manager of Durham Bulls
- Member of National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame
- Died in 2013
