- Served as head coach at the University of Delaware from 1940–1950 with a record 49-16-2
- Became athletic director at Delaware from 1940–1945
- Returned to Duke in 1951, replacing legendary Wallace Wade
- Coached through 1965 season, compiling a record of 93-51-9
- Teams won 1952 SC championship and ACC titles in 1954 and 1960–1962
- ACC co-champion in 1953 and 1955
- Named SC Coach of the Year in 1952 and ACC Coach of the Year in 1954, 1960 and 1962
- Duke teams ranked in final AP top-twenty eight times
- Teams made three bowl game appearances
- Executive director American Football Coaches Association from 1965–1982
- Member of National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame
- Awarded 1972 Amos Alonzo Stagg Award by American Football Coaches Association for lifetime contributions
