- 5-ft.-11-in. guard ed Hugh Morson High School to 1953 state basketball title
- MVP in 1953 East-West Basketball All-Star Game
- Starred at Wake Forest University from 1954–1957
- Second-team All-ACC in 1956, first-team in 1957
- Named to 1957 Converse All-American team
- Scored 1,239 career points, 14.9 per game
- Excellent foul shooter with a career average of 85.8 percent, included ACC-record-setting 39 straight
- Also played baseball as a freshman and senior
- Coached Wake Forest to 8-18 record in 1966
- Was also a standout fast-pitch softball player for teams in Winston-Salem and Canton, Ohio
- Member NC Softball Hall of Fame
