- Played offensive and defensive line at Duke University
- Won Outland Trophy as nation’s top lineman in 1959
- Honored with 1960 McKelvin Award as ACC’s top athlete
- Recognized as ACC Football Player of the Year and All-American in 1959
- Named first-team All-ACC from 1958–1959
- Captain of 1960 college all-star team
- Drafted by St. Louis Cardinals in 1960
- Finished third in voting for Rookie of the Year
- Retired after the 1962 season because of serious neck injury
- Served as assistant football coach at several schools before becoming head coach at East Carolina in 1970
- Became Duke head coach in 1971 and amassed a record of 37-47-4 in eight seasons
- Earned doctorate in sports administration from University of North Carolina
- Served as athletic director at University of Cincinnati from 1980–1984; University of Southern California from 1984–1992; and University of South Carolina from 1992–present
- Member National Football Foundation Hall of Fame
