- Played for Cincinnati, Chicago, and Boston in National League from 1876–1880
- Led NL in home runs, runs scored, and runs batted in 1879
- On June 10, 1880, became first major league player to hit two home runs in one inning
- Involved in salary dispute with Boston in 1880; suspended and eventually blacklisted by NL and did not play again until 1883
- Played for Cincinnati, New York, and Kansas City in the American Association, then a major league, through the 1888 season
- Ended big-league career with .299 batting average
- Umpired for several years
