- Won Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in 1960
- Hard driver and fan favorite whose motto “Go til you blow”
- Became successful stock car owner after retiring in 1966
- Immortalized as “The Last American Hero” by Tom Wolfe in 1965 Esquire magazine article
- Member Stock Car Hall of Fame
