- Multisport star at Orange (NJ) High School and Morgan State College
- Basketball coach at North Carolina A&T from 1954–1972
- All-CIAA running back and basketball captain at Morgan State
- Played semipro basketball and Negro League baseball
- Coached briefly at Johnson C. Smith and Winston-Salem Atkins before becoming head coach at North Carolina A&T
- Compiled a 401-132 record
- Teams captured 1958, 1959, 1962, 1964, and 1967 CIAA titles and 1972 MEAC crown
- Finished third in the 1959 and 1964 NAIA Tournaments
- Served as athletic director at A&T from 1973–1980
- Author of three books on basketball techniques
- Member of CIAA Hall of Fame
- Brother Monte is member of Baseball Hall of Fame
