- Was the 1974 NCAA individual champion and led Wake Forest to the team title.
- Won a legendary 17 PGA Tour championships (winning back-to-back US Open titles)
- Played on six U.S. Ryder Cup teams and was the captain in 2002.
- A member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and the Virginia Hall of Fame.
