- Big-league pitcher in the early 1960s with the Pittsburgh Pirates
- Came to Duke in 1967 as director of special events and coached the Blue Devils baseball team from 1968-1970
- Named Duke athletics director in 1977 and served in that capacity for 21 years
- Retired after supporting the growth of Duke basketball into a national brand, a movement keyed by his hiring of Mike Krzyzewski in 1980.
