- Won more than 1,000 games in high school football, basketball, and baseball during a 40-year coaching career
- Best known for coaching football at Wallace-Rose Hill High School for 34 years
- Served on several boards, including the North Carolina High School Athletic Association board during the 1950s and 1960s
- Made important efforts to integrate high school athletics and expand options for female students
