- Played basketball at Davidson College from 1960–1963
- Led the NCAA in field goal percentage in 1963
- Became men’s head basketball coach at Davidson in 1969–1970 and held that spot five seasons with an overall record of 92-43
- Coached Davidson to four SC titles
- Named SC Coach of the Year three times
- Head coach at University of Virginia from 1974–1990
- Compiled 326-173 record, more wins than any basketball coach in UVA history
- Coached Virginia to 1981 and 1984 Final Four, 1980 NIT championship, and nine appearances in NCAA Tournament
- Named ACC Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1982
- Served as Athletic director at Davidson from 1990–1995 and at Virginia from 1995–2001
