- Native of Sanford, NC
- played football for two NCSHOF coaches, Paul Gay and Mike McGee
- As a running back for Gay, led Sanford High to three consecutive 3A state co-championships and won 36 of 39 games
- Rushed for 1,800 yards and scored 28 touchdowns in 1968
- For McGee at Duke University, earned third-team All-America honors and was named ACC Player of the Year in 1972
- Played six years in the NFL with Buffalo and St. Louis
