  • Attended Indiana on a basketball scholarship and lettered with the Hoosiers in 1951–1952 before signing a pro baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox
  • Played 10 seasons in the big leagues
  • Took over as head coach of NC State in 1963 
  • In 21 seasons as head coach, led the Wolfpack to four ACC titles and the 1968 College World Series 
  • Twice named ACC Coach of the Year
  • Finished his career at State with a 513-253 record, becoming the winningest coach in the program’s history
