- Attended Indiana on a basketball scholarship and lettered with the Hoosiers in 1951–1952 before signing a pro baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox
- Played 10 seasons in the big leagues
- Took over as head coach of NC State in 1963
- In 21 seasons as head coach, led the Wolfpack to four ACC titles and the 1968 College World Series
- Twice named ACC Coach of the Year
- Finished his career at State with a 513-253 record, becoming the winningest coach in the program’s history
