- Came to fame in 1974 when, as the head pro at MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary, he beat Sam Snead on the first hole of a playoff to win the national PGA Club Championship at Pinehurst No. 2
- Successfully defended title the following year and was regarded throughout the 1970s as one of the best club pros in the country
- Branched out to become a successful businessman in the golf industry, building and managing courses through a variety of ventures
