- Born in Ingle Hollow, NC, 1931
- NASCAR driver and owner
- Got his start running moonshine near home in Wilkes County
- Began racing in the mid-1950s
- Won 50 races in career, 13 races in 1965
- First racer to win at each of the four original superspeedways: Darlington, Daytona, Charlotte, and Atlanta
- Won Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in 1960
- Hard driver and fan favorite whose motto “Go til you blow”
- Became successful stock car owner after retiring in 1966
- Immortalized as “The Last American Hero” by Tom Wolfe in 1965 Esquire magazine article
- Member Stock Car Hall of Fame
