- Starred on unbeaten football and basketball teams at Ayden High School in Pitt County and pitched for Ayden’s only state championship baseball team
- Starting QB at the University of North Carolina under coach Bill Dooley
- Received the ACC’s first Brian Piccolo Award
- Led the Tar Heels to a 9–3 season in 1971 that ended with a Gator Bowl appearance
