- Born in Chicago, IL
- Played, then coached, basketball at West Point before being named head coach at Duke University in 1980
- “Coach K” led the Blue Devils to first of 12 Final Fours in 1986 and 5 national titles (1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015)
- On Jan. 25, 2015, became the first coach in Division I men’s basketball history to win 1,000 games
- Coached the US Olympic team to gold medals in 2008, 2012
- Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001
