- Graduate of Benedict College; earned master’s degree from Columbia and doctorate from New York University

- Coach at North Carolina Central from 1945–1974
- Teams won 30 national titles
- Coached numerous All-Americans and Olympians
- Head coach of the 1976 U.S. track and field team
- Head coach of the 1960 Israel and Ethiopia Olympic track teams, and consultant of the 1968 Trinidad and Kenya Olympic track teams
- President of the U.S. Olympic Committee from 1992–1996
- Coached briefly at Benedict College, Bishop College, and Prairie View College before coming to North Carolina
- Chancellor of North Carolina Central from 1983–1986
- Member of 14 halls of fame and winner of numerous civic honors
