- Native of Mount Olive, NC
- Played basketball at Louisburg College and East Carolina University from 1978–1982
- Switched to team handball in 1982 and quickly became one of the world’s top players
- Member of the U.S. Olympic team in 1984, 1988, and 1992
- Led the team to a fourth-place finish in the 1984 games
- Also led the U.S. to the gold medal in 1987 Pan-American Games
- Second-leading scorer in the 1988 Olympics
- Voted U.S. Player of the Year three times
