John Kelly “Buddy” Lewis​

  • Briefly attended Wake Forest University before signing pro contract in 1934
  • Made Washington Senators roster in 1935 and spent entire major league career with the club
  • Third baseman from 1935-1939 season but switched to outfield after leading the AL in errors in three seasons
  • Batted over .300 on four occasions and scored more than 100 runs four times
  • Batted .297 for his career and was named to AL All-Star team in 1938 and 1947
  • Led AL with 16 triples in 1939
  • Had 15 hits in four consecutive games in July 1937, an AL record
  • Retired following the 1949 season
  • Part of the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942-1944 and flew more than 350 missions in China-Burma-India theater
