- Extremely versatile athlete— hurdler, decathlete, long jumper
- Winner of first McKelvin Award, presented to ACC’s top athlete in 1954
- Won three individual events at the 1953 SC championships, four at the 1954 ACC championships, and three at the 1955 ACC championships
- Won 1955 NCAA long jump title
- Finished third in 110-meter high hurdles at 1956 Olympics
