- Starred on Durham High School teams that won 69 straight games and three consecutive state titles; graduated in 1940
- Started college career at NC State
- Led SC in scoring in 1942
- Drafted into the army; discharged in 1946
- Finished college at University of North Carolina
- Led UNC to second-place finish in NCAA Tournament
- Played with Washington Capitols of Basketball Association of America from 1946 until club folded in January 1951
- Completed 1951 season and next season with Boston Celtics
- Player-coach in 1950–1951
- Averaged 9.4 points per game professionally
- Named first-team All-BAA in 1948 and second-team All-BAA in 1949
- Served as assistant coach at Wake Forest University from 1952–1957, while attending Southeastern Baptist Seminary
- Head coach at Wake Forest from 1957–1965
- Coached school to 1961–1962 ACC titles and a third-place finish in 1962 NCAA Tournament
- Holds a record of 122-94 as collegiate head coach
- Coached ABA Carolina Cougars to 42-42 record in 1970
- Retired midseason in 1971 with 17-25 mark
- Became college basketball broadcaster
- Died in 1997
