- Took over a Wilson Fike High School football program that had lost 31 of its last 33 games, reversing the Cyclones’ fortunes and coaching them to an unprecedented three consecutive 4-A state championships from 1967-1969
- Coached for more than 60 years at every level of the game, including 11 years with East Carolina and 9 years with NC State
