- The basketball guard was named All-SC second team in 1943, first team in 1944-1945
- As a quarterback, he earned All-SC second team in 1943, first team in 1944–1945
- Captained the 1944 football team while in medical school
- Led Duke to 29-26 victory over Alabama in 1945 Sugar Bowl, the school’s first bowl victory
- Made several football All-American teams
- Ran track for three years and played freshman baseball
- Turned down a chance to play pro football opting for an internship at Johns Hopkins
- Became a prominent surgeon
