- Named All-SC and second-team All-American as halfback in 1939
- Rushed for 20 or more yards 23 times, leading to nickname One Play McAfee.
- Drafted by Chicago Bears and helped team to 1940, 1941, 1946 NFL titles
- Versatile player used as rusher, receiver, punter, defensive back, and kick returner
- One of top punt returners in NFL history
- Named All-NFL in 1941
- Led league with 12 touchdowns in 1941
- Break in football career while in the military from 1942–1944
- Led league in punt returns in 1948
- Rushed for 1,685 career yards, caught 85 passes, intercepted 21 passes, returned 112 punts an average of 12.8 yards, and scored 39 touchdowns, many of a spectacular nature
- Retired to Durham, NC after 1950 season
- Officiated NFL games from 1961–1966
- Inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame
