  • Learned to play golf in early 1930s and became top amateur golfer 
  • Coached golf and football at Duke University
  • Played football at Alabama under Wallace Wade
  • Followed Wade to Duke as assistant football coach, holding position from 1931-1958
  • Became Duke’s first full-time golf coach from 1933–1973
  • Teams compiled dual-match record of 298-85-13
  • Won 13 SC team titles and five ACC team titles
  • Teams finished in NCAA Tournament seven times
  • Best finish was second place in 1947
  • Member of National Collegiate Golf Coaches Hall of Fame
  • Died in 1990
