- Learned to play golf in early 1930s and became top amateur golfer
- Coached golf and football at Duke University
- Played football at Alabama under Wallace Wade
- Followed Wade to Duke as assistant football coach, holding position from 1931-1958
- Became Duke’s first full-time golf coach from 1933–1973
- Teams compiled dual-match record of 298-85-13
- Won 13 SC team titles and five ACC team titles
- Teams finished in NCAA Tournament seven times
- Best finish was second place in 1947
- Member of National Collegiate Golf Coaches Hall of Fame
- Died in 1990
