- Hampered by injuries throughout college career; underwent nine operations during pros career
- Played 18 seasons in NFL — 1957–1963 for Philadelphia Eagles and 1964–1974 for Washington Redskins
- Strong-armed quarterback who set NFL record for passing yards, completions, and touchdown passes in 1961 before breaking his own marks several times
- Led league in passing yards five times
- Exceeded 400 yards passing in a single game five times
- Threw five touchdown passes in a game twice
- Completed 2,433 of 4,262 passes, for 32,224 yards, and 255 touchdowns during his career
- Named to five Pro Bowl squads
- Considered by many the finest pure passer in pro football history
- Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame
