  • Changed name after moving to Indiana to live with his uncle named Jones
  • Flamboyant player, nicknamed Knight of the Limitless Linen
  • First NC native to star in big leagues
  • Played for Cincinnati, Chicago, and Boston in National League from 1876–1880
  • Led NL in home runs, runs scored, and runs batted in 1879
  • On June 10, 1880, became first major league player to hit two home runs in one inning
  • Involved in salary dispute with Boston in 1880; suspended and eventually blacklisted by NL and did not play again until 1883
  • Played for Cincinnati, New York, and Kansas City in the American Association, then a major league, through the 1888 season
  • Ended big-league career with .299 batting average
  • Umpired for several years
