- All-State quarterback at Cleveland High School
- Moved to defense at University of Minnesota, where he was All-American tackle
- Won Outland Trophy as nation’s top lineman in 1962
- Finished third in voting for Heisman Trophy, a rare achievement for a defensive lineman
- Played in the 1963 College All-Star Game
- Signed with Dallas Texans (who became Kansas City Chiefs) after college, becoming one of the first big-name collegians to spurn NFL for AFL
- One of the game’s top linebackers and feared pass rusher, Played in six AFL all-star games and three Pro Bowls
- Named to the all-time AFL team in 1969
- Finished his pro career with 26 interceptions and nine touchdowns
- Member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame
