- All-American linebacker at Duke University in 1966
- Named All-ACC in 1965 and 1966
- Known for intelligence, quickness, and competitiveness
- First-round pick by Cleveland in 1967 NFL draft and played four seasons for the team
- Traded in 1971 to Miami, where he had his best seasons
- Specialized in rushing the passer from linebacker spot
- Key figure in Miami’s undefeated 1972 season and victories in Super Bowls VII and VIII
- Retired in 1980
- Became Duke linebacker coach
- Forced to give up coaching when he contracted Hodgkin’s disease in 1982
- Died in 1994
