- Born 1918 in Philadelphia, raised in Durham
- Helped Duke University capture four SC golf team championships and won two individual titles
- Joined the PGA tour in 1946 and won three tournaments
- Earning a spot on the 1949 and 1951 Ryder Cup teams
- Overcame near tragedy in 1950 when he was badly burned in a plane crash; underwent numerous operations, including 17 skin grafts, and returned to the course to win his lone match for the 1951 Ryder Cup team
- Became a top club pro in St. Petersburg, Florida
- Awarded the 1959 PGA Club Pro title and the 1959 Ben Hogan Award for courage
- Died in 1997
