  • Most successful college coach in state’s history
  • All-American lineman at Brown in 1917
  • Head coach at University of Alabama from 1923–1930
  • Compiled a record of 61-13-3 with four SC titles and three Rose Bowl appearances
  • Won 1925, 1926, and 1930 national championships
  • Became Duke University head coach in 1931, taking the school to unprecedented heights. 
  • Compiled record of 85-19-3 from 1931–1941
  • Helped the Blue Devils to six SC titles and two Rose Bowl appearances, including the 1942 game that Duke hosted just weeks after Pearl Harbor
  • Produced numerous All-Americans at Alabama and Duke
  • Served in the army during World War II; awarded Bronze Star
  • Returned to coach from 1946 through 1950, but was unable to duplicate prewar success
  • Duke did win 1950 SC title; finished with final record at Duke of 110-36-7
  • Overall head coaching record of 171-49-10
  • Served as SC commissioner in 1950
  • Astute football analyst and demanding taskmaster
  • Member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame
  • Died in 1986
