- Native of Marion, NC
- Learned the game under Dean Smith and worked his way up the UNC ladder until being named head coach at Kansas in 1988
- Won more than 80 percent of his games during 15 years with the Jayhawks, reaching 4 Final Fours
- Returned to UNC in 2003 and led the Tar Heels to national titles in 2005 and 2009, becoming one of just 13 coaches to win multiple NCAA titles
- Inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007
